No more excuses. Get the bike out.

March 19, 2007

It's not been a good winter for riding. Too cold. Too much slush. Too busy.

Too many excuses.

In reality, it was really a good winter for riding. The gravel roads were icy and smooth. The snowmobile trails were hard packed. The lake had lots of ice. But time and schedules got in the way. Too many excuses. Not enough riding.

Most of my winter has been holed up inside, in meetings, firmly planted on my posterior. Oddly enough, a few of those meetings were discussions about advocating for mountain bike trails.

Luckily, when there was too much snow for the bike, it was just enough for snow shoes. Wandering in the woods on wicker walkers is a wonderful way to keep the quads and calves limber, and good for the lungs if the snow is deep.

But now that most of the snow is gone and the roads are bare, it's time to stop with the excuses and get the bike out. And so I did. It was a short ride, only 15 km, with a rest stop near the end. A leisurely ride, it was that for sure. But I found out today that the bike taunts and pokes at muscles that have been idle for a few months. At least I had the sense to take it easy.

When the snowshoes are scraping the gravel a bit too much, it's time for the bike. Way past time.

No more excuses.
