Wet behind the gears

July 19, 2004

Everyone is complaining about the weather.

I know it's probably no worse than any other year, but every day that I want to get out on the bike, it pours rain. Maybe it's just a bad coincidence.

Riding along the shore of Brackley Beach, PEI

One sign that we're not going into the great flood is that the trails are surprisingly dry around here. Granted, some of the muck holes are as sloppy as ever, but reflecting back no worse than other summers on average.

But all that mist and rain has an impact on my bike. Rides are like a chore when it's damp. My chain won't stay lubed. My glasses fog up. My feet are wet. Branches that usually just whip me in passing now give me a cold, wet slap in the face.

But I'm optimistic. August will be dryer, I feel it in my bones. And besides, my vacation will be over, a sure sign of good weather to come.
